Public Health Expert Dr. Loren Shaffer Joins HMS

Pittsburgh, PA, April 10, 2007 ‐‐ Health Monitoring Systems (HMS) said today that Dr. Loren Shaffer has been appointed the company’s director of research.

“Loren joining our company is indeed great news,” said Keven J. Hutchison, HMS president and CEO. “He brings tremendous experience and understands the needs of public health, at all levels of government. That expertise will be real catalysts for our growth.”

Shaffer most recently managed the Ohio Department of Health’s Early Event Surveillance Section. He was responsible for recruiting hospital data providers to participate in an emergency room admissions surveillance system. More than 100 hospitals in Ohio were networked and participation was expanded to include facilities in Kentucky and Michigan.

Previously, Shaffer was U.S. Army Special Operations preventive medicine officer, receiving advanced training in biological warfare agents at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. Shaffer’s professional memberships include the International Society of Infectious Diseases and the International Society for Disease Surveillance. He has spoken at numerous professional conferences on the implementation and use of syndromic surveillance methods used by public health officials. Shaffer has also been published in scholarly publications on such topics as zoonotic disease, and was a contributing author in The Handbook of Biosurveillance. Shaffer and his family live in the Columbus, Ohio, area.
